    The Nielsen Company had conducted a study related to online shopping of year 2010 and reported that 1.1 million Malaysian shoppers aged 18 years and above spent an average of RM2,461 online. The amount they spent for shopping on local websites was RM825 million while foreign websites RM998 million. The main reasons Malaysians bought from overseas websites were because overseas websites had the products cannot be found in the country, wider choice and higher quality products. Better discount and less expensive were not so important anymore if compared with wider choice and product availability.

    Based on this survey, the local e-commerce merchant should sell more choices of the good quality products to beat the oversea websites and increase their online business revenue.

  • Internet Usage in Malaysia 2010


    The latest Nielson’s Mobile Insights Malaysia 2010 survey reported that the Internet usage in Malaysia has increased to 41%, with consumers aged 20-24 recorded as the highest age group accessing the internet who spends an average of 22.3 hours online with a total of 36% being internet subscribers.

    71% of the online activities are spent on social networking platform such Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, etc while instant messaging comes in second at 35%, followed by local news at 34%, video sharing (such as via YouTube) at 33%, online search and online games both at 23%.

    72% of the respondents said that coverage is the key factor in determining consumer satisfaction with speed coming in second at 54%. Due to the coverage is the key issue to the consumer, mobile broadband started become more popular among the internet users. The Nielson survey also reported that the market share of mobile broadband has been doubled from 20% in 2009 to 54% in 2010 with devices such as laptops and netbooks being most frequently used to access the internet (55%). Accessing Internet via mobile phone is increased significantly from 2% in 2009 to 11% in 2010, especially among young people aged 20-24. A recent BuzzCity report 2010 also reported that the increase in mobile internet usage across the country predominantly derived from four Malaysian states namely Selangor (20%), Kuala Lumpur (16%), Sabah (15.7%), and Johor (12%) and their findings revealed the majority of users consist of working adults between the ages of 18 - 45 while those belonging to the above 30 age group accounted for 36% of users.
